Last week the Bainbridge lacrosse teams continued to shine, the girls currently in 1st place in their Alki Conference, and the boys 2d, right after Eastside Catholic, in Metro Division I.
The boys started out their week on April 8 at home with a win over Nathan Hale. Max Wickline, a junior, led his team with a double hat trick. He has scored three or more goals in five out of seven of his last starting games. In Tuesday’s game, he earned nine points: 6 goals and 3 assists.
Bainbridge outscored the Raiders 5-1 in the first quarter. By the half, they had increased the lead to 8-1. The Raiders got in one goal to the Spartans’ three in the third, and then Bainbridge popped in an emphatic four goals in the last quarter to close the deal at 15-4.
Despite the high score, the Raiders’ keeper Austin Keaton had a remarkable 22 saves on the 37 Spartan shots.
Then on April 9, the Spartan girls finished with an 11-11 draw at home against Eastside Catholic. The first half ended in a 5-5 tie. The goal-for-goal pattern continued to the end of the game. Spartan keeper McKenzie Scott made 8 saves for her team.
Paige Brigham and Sonia Olsen both made four goals. Sallie Marx popped in two. The Crusaders distributed their goals across the team, with Ashley Blanton and Maddie Banks leading with two apiece.
The draw was the first for both teams and the first imperfection on the Spartan record this season.
Thursday night, April 10, at Magnuson Park, the Spartan girls handily downed Holy Names, 17-7. Both Marx and Ellen Carpenter collected hat tricks, and Marx also provided three assists.
The Spartans had the lead 6-3 at the half. The Cougars got in four goals in the second, and keeper Martha Blatner had eight saves, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Spartans.
On Friday, April 11, at home, the boys took care of Kennedy Catholic in a 10-5 win. In the first quarter, the Spartans established a 3-1 lead, and they ended the half 4-2. In the third quarter, they outscored the Lancers 4-1.
Four Spartans—Jackson Larkin, Max Wickline, Jack Frickleton, and Thomas Daniels—each had two goals. Spartan keeper Reynolds Yarbrough made 11 saves on 16 threatening Kennedy shots. The Lancers’ Charles Bergseth had nine saves.
The boys next face Seattle Academy (3-1-0), Wednesday, April 16, in a 5 p.m. start at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island. way game against Glacier Peak (3-0-0), with a 7:30 p.m. start.
